Two-time Scottish Jazz Award-winning vocalist (2017 & 2018), virtuoso jazz violinist, orchestral arranger and BBC ‘Jazz Nights’ broadcaster Seonaid Aitken launches her debut solo jazz album - ‘What Is This Thing Called Love?’ - with the Scottish Session Orchestra. The ‘Jazz’ world meets the ‘Classical’ world as this hand-picked ensemble made up of the top orchestral players from Scottish orchestras - including many leaders and section principals from the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra - join together to play Seonaid’s cinematic orchestrations of Great American Songbook favourites, Jazz standards, Scottish songs and popular classics.

Well known on the Scottish Jazz scene with her award-winning band Rose Room (Best Band at the 2018 Scottish Jazz Awards), Seonaid has also sung and played with International jazz stars Martin Taylor MBE, the Tim Kliphuis Sextet and the Tokyo Django Collective as well as being a regular violinist with the orchestra of Scottish Opera for 19 years and much in demand as a session musician across Scotland. As an arranger she has been commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, BBC/Richard Curtis/Roald Dahl film ‘Esio Trot’ and the Red Hot Chilli Pipers among many other Scottish folk, pop and acoustic acts.

Seonaid has been inspired by this unique collaboration with Scotland’s finest musicians - the 26-piece string orchestra including harp who featured on the soundtrack to the Hollywood movie ‘Outlaw King’ - and her styles of orchestration to accompany her award-winning vocals and jazz violin playing include flavours of the 1930s Golden Era, MGM musicals, Broadway pizzazz, Argentine Tango and a novel piece in pizzicato! This luxurious string ensemble was expertly recorded at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall’s New Auditorium by GRAMMY-winning engineer David Donaldson - Hollywood composer Craig Armstrong’s right-hand man for many years - and their lush sound is captured on tracks such as Erroll Garner’s ‘Misty’ and the atmospheric ‘Ill Wind’ (Harold Arlen) in contrast to their dynamic, virtuosic playing on McHugh/Fields’ ‘I Can’t Give You Anything But Love’ and cinematic-style backing to Seonaid’s original composition - French-flavoured waltz ‘Papillon’ for jazz violin.

Special guest on the album is Young Scottish Jazz Musician guitarist Joe Williamson whose stunning, sensitive playing features on Seonaid’s jazz/orchestral re-imagining of Robert Burns’ ‘Ae Fond Kiss’.
